Mused after reading two amazing statistics:
Only 54% of adult Americans currently drink. It’s the lowest since statistics began over 80 years ago. In 2020 it was 67%. It typically fluctuates 58-64%.
The average lightning strike is between 2 and 10 miles long (this includes air length as well as ground travel). In 2017, a lightning strike stretched 515 miles! The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration routinely records the 40 million strikes that hit the U.S. each year. Your odds of getting hit? Less than one in a million.
SCIENTISTS ARE FINALLY MAKING PROGRESS AGAINST ALZHEIMER’S
The latest research in Alzheimer’s suggests that medicines and lifestyle changes can not only slow but also prevent and even reverse the debilitating disease.
Alzheimer’s is characterized by a buildup of amyloid plaque and tangles of tau proteins in the brain. They trigger inflammation, which causes cognitive decline and neuron death. Much is still not understood about this complex disease.
The only two approved treatments for Alzheimer’s slow progression by removing amyloid plaque. They reduce cognitive decline by 25% to 36% over 18 months compared to placebo groups. Those in the earliest stages of the disease benefit the most. Nearly half showed no progression one year later. Recent follow-up has shown that the benefits grow over time.
Lifestyle changes can augment the benefits. A recent randomized trial found that a “treatment” of regular physical and cognitive exercise, a nutritious diet, and social engagement improved cognitive performance.
(Did You Know? Alzheimer’s tends to run in families with a gene APOE4 as the greatest genetic risk factor.)
One untapped area is the gut microbiomes. The bacteria in the gut differ between those with and those without Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s patients have lower levels of a bacteria that produces a fatty acid, “propionate”, found in dietary fiber. Propionate helps regulate appetite as well as brain inflammation and amyloid buildup. This leads to the thought that probiotics or fiber may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s by decreasing amyloid.
Another promising study showed that diets deficient in lithium resulted in more amyloid. Lithium protects neurons.
Herpes virus, which causes chicken pox, shingles, and cold sores, may also be linked to increased amyloid buildup, brain inflammation, and risk of dementia. A study earlier this year found that those treated with the shingles vaccine were 20% less likely to develop dementia.

Wine of the Week: Grüner Veltliner
Today’s wine is Grüner Veltliner. Gruner Veltliner is Austria’s most significant white wine. Gruner Veltliner is typically a dry white wine, not sweet. While it can exhibit fruity flavors like lime, lemon, and nectarine, these are not indicative of sweetness. The key characteristic of Gruner Veltliner is its high acidity and often noticeable peppery notes, rather than residual sugar. Grüner Veltliner works brilliantly with vegetables, light fish and seafood, and fried foods.
LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

Ways to Use Tomatoes
Peak season for tomatoes has arrived. Whether you have a garden or just notice the increase at the grocery, here are some suggestions to use them.
Vinaigrette: quarter tomatoes, season with salt and mash with a fork. Add minced shallot and red wine vinegar. Let stand 10 minutes. Stir in olive oil. Good for not only salad but also chicken and fish.
Pan Sauce: Add halved tomatoes and sprig of rosemary to a hot pan in which you’ve cooked fish or chicken, and cook until tomatoes soften. Deglaze with a shot of wine, then stir in a small amount of chicken stock.
Salsa: Stir together halved tomatoes with chopped onion, a minced jalapeno chile, fresh lime juice, and chopped cilantro.
Scramble: Cook halved tomatoes in oil in a skillet before adding whipped eggs seasoned with soy sauce and chives.
