His love of plastic surgery began as an undergraduate at Stanford University in Palo Alto California. California where as a plastic surgeon served as a role model for Dr. McKenna. Upon completing his bachelor of science degree, he returned to the midwest to attend medical school. After attaining his degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Dr. McKenna completed residencies in general surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati and in plastic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also completed special plastic surgery training at the Eastern Virginia Medical Center in Norfolk, Virginia, and at Stanford Medical Center in Stanford, California.
Dr. McKenna’s professional affiliations include membership in the prestigious American Board of Plastic Surgery, as well as his positions as Diplomat for the American Board of Plastic Surgery and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has published articles for journals and written a book chapter on plastic surgery.
In addition, Dr. McKenna manages to find time to participate in humanitarian outreach. He has served as the Chairman for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life benefit for breast cancer and traveled to Brazil on a two-week medical mission sponsored by the volunteer organization, Interplast. While in Brazil, Dr. McKenna performed reconstructive surgeries for conditions such as cleft lips and palates.
Dr. McKenna is the assistant director of Plastic Surgery at the Bethesda Hospitals. Additional affiliations include the Christ Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital and Evendale Medical Center.
Personally, Dr. McKenna has four girls. His interests include fitness, wine collecting, and spending time with his family and dogs. He also enjoys traveling, tennis, golf and has run the Boston Marathon twice.
