10 Life Swaps for Better Health
• Trade nuts for refined carbohydrates like chips and crackers. Some evidence suggests that nuts lower your risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
• Swap lentils for plant proteins for some of your animal proteins. Those who consistently do those are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
• Cook at home instead of eating out. Not only will you control the type of foods you eat, but you also control the portion size.
• Try barley or other whole grains instead of white rice or refined grains. Refined grains strip away the fibrous bran and nutrient-rich germ. Other whole grains include: brown rice, bulgar, farro, oats, and quinoa.
• Swap exercise you hate for movement you love. Physical exercise does not have to be regimented to be beneficial. Dancing, hiking, biking, walking, or gardening are all beneficial. Try doing some with family or friends for more enjoyment.
(Did You Know? I’ve always loved running and am currently training for the half marathon in Columbus. The Loveland bike trail provides a comfortable setting for longer runs.)
• Try a “dessert flip”. For example, instead of putting strawberries on cake, try putting dark chocolate shavings on strawberries.
• Choose crunchy produce, not chips. Try vegetables with fat-free ranch dressing or apple slices with nut butter.
• Choose small plates over big plates as a way of controlling portion size.
• Try a walk instead of a snack. Activity can boost energy, alleviate boredom, and reduce stress.
• Use the stairs, not the elevator. Or my favorite is to park away from the store and walk that extra distance. Using commercial time to do small chores around the house also adds activity.

End of Summer Spritzer Cocktails
With the long weekend coming near the end of summer, symbols of Labor Day, kids back to school, and the cooler weather of fall, it’s one last time to enjoy a “summer” cocktail, and a lower alcohol one at that.

Negroni Spritz: 3 parts prosecco, 1 part Campari, 1part sweet vermouth
Chambord Spritz: 3 parts sparkling water, 2 parts prosecco, 1part Chambord
White Wine Spritzer: white wine, lemon or lime, club soda
Elderflower Spritz: 2 parts white wine, 2 parts soda water, 1.5 parts elderflower liquor
Rose Spritzer: Same as an Aperol spritzer, but use pink prosecco, ½ oz. grapefruit juice and mint. By Giada.
Red Wine Spritzer: 3 parts light red wine and ½ parts club soda
Blood Orange Spritzer: Same as a white wine spritzer, but add an equal amount of blood orange juice
Cheers!
LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Steak Pizzaiola (in the style of)
Thinly sliced steak with seasonal tomatoes and capers adds a burst of flavor. The recipe states skirt steak, but I prefer either flatiron or flank steak. Whichever you choose, don’t cook beyond medium and slice thinly.
Sprinkle room-temperature steak with salt and pepper and cook either in a pan (or grill) for roughly 4 minutes a side. Set on a cutting board, cover with foil, and allow to rest. In a medium warm skillet, add 2 TBLS. of olive oil. Add 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced, and stir often for 2-3 minutes. Add 1 TBLS. capers, stir for another minute. Remove both and set aside on a paper towel. To the skillet, add a thinly sliced onion and cook until softened, about 4 minutes. Add 1 lb. of halved cherry tomatoes and a spicy chili, with or without seeds. Stir until tomatoes break down, about 5 minutes. Turn down the heat to simmer for about another 8 minutes until the tomatoes release their liquid. Stir in ¼ cup of chopped herbs (basil, oregano, etc.), 1 TBLS. vinegar, 2 TBLS. capers with brine and a tsp. of salt. Heat all for another minute.
Thinly slice the steak and spoon tomato mixture over top.
