Mused after reading that “Dog Days of Summer” purportedly came from ancient times from the brightest star in the night sky: Sirius, known as the Dog Star. Also, Sirius is located in the constellation of Canis Major or Greater Dog so it’s linked to canine associations. Homer in “The Iliad”, referred to “the star they call Orion’s dog.” Since it is in the same region of the sky as the sun, they believed that it added to the sun’s warmth. Something to think about while you’re trying to escape the heat of summer, as dogs do. -Ben Zimmer

WHERE ARE WE WITH SUNSCREENS?
-About 88% of men still say they never use sunscreen
-One in seven adults under the age of 35 believe that sunscreen is more harmful that direct sunlight. (Sunscreens don’t cause cancer.)
Melanoma has increased eightfold in women ages 18-39 from 1970 to 2009! A recent study in Japan showed that one application of sunscreen effectively covered only 60% of the intended area but a second application increased this to 90%.
Both types of rays from the sun, UVA and UVB can do damage to collagen fibers leading to premature aging of the skin AND can damage DNA contributing to skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and have the ability to pass through glass and clouds. SPF is an acronym for Sun Protection Factor which only rates the amount of UVB rays that reach the skin. Therefore, it is important to use a “Broadspectrum” product for both UVB and UVA protection.
It is recommended that the SPF be a minimum of 15. This allows 1/15th of the sun’s UVB radiation to reach the skin. SPF 30 allows 1/30th of the rays and a 96% UVB protection. It is also recommended to apply sun protection 15-30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the chemicals to absorb into the skin. Reapplying the product every 2 hours is necessary because the formulas break down in the presence of sunlight within that time. Use about two tablespoons to cover face neck, chest, ears, and hands. Don’t forget to rub in spray-on sunscreens. Remember to use lip balm that has SPF 30 or higher too.
(Did You Know? Anti-oxidants like vitamin C serum when applied before your sunscreen help to prevent sun damage which can accelerate aging and wrinkles.)
Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and convert UV light to harmless heat. Mineral sunscreens (their bottles should be shaken before application) contain ingredients like zinc oxide and act as a physical barrier reflecting UV rays before they can penetrate. Bemotrizinol or Parsol is a product used in other countries that is up for approval in the U.S. next spring. It offers protection with fewer ingredients.
All of the sun protection products at our office have both UVA and UVB formulations and between August 1-14 are 27.8% off. We also sell a number of anti-oxidant, vitamin C serums. Call to make an appointment to see one of our skin care nurses who will clarify which product would be best for you. The skin care nurses are available Monday through Friday with some evening hours.

Wine of the Week; Cava (Spanish Champagne)
Today’s wine is Cava. Cava is mostly produced in the northeast corner of Spain. It can be white or rose coming from any of nine permitted grapes. It can range from sweet to very dry. It is more like true French champagne than the sweeter Italian Prosecco. Like French champagne, it goes well with a number of dishes including the ceviche below. Explore food with it as the cost of even good Cava tends to be about half of what “real” champagne runs. Cheers!
LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Spicy Ceviche, with or without “cooked’ seafood.

Ceviche traditionally has seafood (sole, tuna, scallops, etc.) that are “cooked” by marinating them in acids such as lime, lemon or orange juice. Ceviche can also be made by cooking shrimp and adding that to the traditional ingredients. Either way, it’s a nice small meal or appetizer on a hot summer night.
If you are using uncooked seafood like above: add 1 cup orange juice, 1/3 cup each lime and lemon juice, 1 tsp. red pepper flake, a diced red onion, a minced clove of garlic to a pound of your favorite uncooked seafood diced or ½ pound of two of the above. Make sure seafood is covered by the juices, cover and set in refrigerator for 3 or more hours until fish is white. (Tuna only needs an hour.) Once “cooked” or if using cooked shrimp, I like to add some of the following: a diced green or red bell pepper, a tsp. ginger, a cup of diced cherry tomatoes, a couple of diced green onions, a small can of green chilis, or an avocado or two that’s been diced.
Add ½ cup of chopped cilantro or parsley and serve on lettuce.
(You can also poach uncooked seafood by putting it in simmering water for a minute or two to cook it.)
BONUS: La Jaiba restaurant in Symmes Township on Montgomery Road has terrific shrimp ceviche.
