| Mused after watching two shows that I felt were worthwhile. Billy Joel’s story is on HBO and is told over five hours. An extremely talented musician from the time he was a boy. Much like Elton John’s story, some people are incredibly gifted but have “demons” they have to control. “Untamed” is on Netflix and is a drama set in Yosemite National Park. Someone dies within minutes of starting the series, but the final answers don’t come until the last five minutes of the last show. Good acting and you’ll recognize Sam Neill from many other shows and movies like Jurassic Park. |

| WHEN DO YOU BENEFIT FROM ELECTROLYTE DRINKS?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge. Sodium plays a role in regulating fluid balance and blood pressure. Potassium is essential for nerve conduction, and calcium is critical for muscle contraction.
We get electrolytes from food and drink. We lose them through bodily fluids such as sweat, urine, blood, vomit and diarrhea. Our kidneys play the main role in regulating electrolytes. Kidney disease, diabetes, and heart disease all can interfere with regulation of electrolyte levels.
(Did You Know? Gatorade was invented in 1965 by a team of researchers at the University of Florida, led by Dr. Robert Cade, to help the school’s football team, the Florida Gators, combat dehydration and electrolyte loss during games. The original formula was a mix of water, sugar, salt, potassium, and lemon juice, designed to replenish what the players lost in sweat. The name “Gatorade” was a nod to the Florida Gators.)
There are very few circumstances we need electrolyte drinks. Most of the time, simple water replacement is all that is needed. Think marathon running, endurance cycling, or manual labor. Also, if you have a gastrointestinal illness. A good rule of thumb is that if you will be exercising over an hour, add an electrolyte drink to the water you are consuming. Lastly, if you had one too many the night before, electrolyte drinks may help nurse that hangover.

Wine of the Week: Vinho Verde

Today’s wine is Vinho Verde. Vinho Verde is mostly produced in the northern area of Portugal. It is a white wine coming from any of six permitted grapes. It has tastes of melon, gooseberry, grapefruit, lime, and lemonade. It tastes similar to sauvignon blanc, except (interestingly), it is artificially carbonated, so it has a fizzy taste. It goes well with salad, fish tacos, and sushi. It is also a good wine to just sip at the park, beach, or poolside. Chill the wine first, then yourself. |

| LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Easy Way to Make Protein Shakes |
|
|
After a good workout, the best way to refuel your body is with a protein shake.
Step 1: Start with a liquid. Try to avoid high-sugar (caloric) drinks and use low-calorie juices, almond or coconut milk, green tea, and nonfat milk.
Step 2: Choose your produce. Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables amp up the nutrients, fiber, and flavor. Try 1-2 handfuls of greens and/or ½ -2 cups of everything else. Options include spinach, carrots, kale, beets, cucumber, cherries, apples, bananas, pears, pineapple, and mango. (Kroger has BAGS of these in the frozen food section.)
Step 3: Scoop in protein. Shoot for at least 30 grams of protein per shake. That’s roughly 1 cup of dairy (milk, kefir, yogurt) and protein powder.
Options: Some recommendations include adding fat such as nuts, peanut butter, avocado, or nut butter. Another option is to increase taste complexity using cocoa nibs, ginger, mint, basil, ground cinnamon, or jalapenos. Adding creatine increases muscle growth too.
Blend and enjoy!
