Apple’s hearing study, in conjunction with the University of Michigan, looked at 57,000 iPhone users and found this connection, particularly in those older than 60. It may also be an indication of an inner-ear or balance problem. Hearing loss is also associated with dementia, depression, loneliness, and an increased risk of falling. GET YOUR HEARING TESTED NOW!

HIGH CHOLESTEROL TREATMENT AND WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW

High cholesterol can lead to heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, and other problems associated with blockages of blood vessels. The treatment of these falls under three categories: dietary, lifestyle, and medicine.

    Diet
    1. Reduce saturated fats that increase the “bad” LDL, such as red meats, butter, and cheese.
    2. Eliminate trans fats found in vegetable oils used in baked goods and fried foods.
    3. Increase fiber, which binds to cholesterol to flush it through your system.
    4. Replace oils with canola and olive oils. Nuts, seeds, and avocados have healthy fats too.
    5. Consume omega-rich foods such as salmon and take supplements like krill oil (best is Antarctic).

(Did You Know? The Mayo Clinic says that taking whey protein may also help reduce cholesterol. That would also supplement the exercise recommended, particularly for you GLP-1 users)

    Lifestyle Modifications
    1. Exercise regularly. The recommendation is 150 minutes each week, as this raises your “good” HDL.
    2. Manage body weight since losing weight decreases LDL.
    3. Quit the smoking that damages blood vessel walls and decreases HDL.
    4. Optimizing your sleep helps regulate your lipids.
    5. Minimize chronic stress through whatever activities help relax you. Me, I go home after work and cook dinner. Unusual, perhaps, but it takes my mind away from stress.

    Medical Treatments
    1. Statins block the production of cholesterol in the liver.
    2. Cholesterol absorption inhibitors work in the small intestine.
    3. PCSK9 absorption inhibitors help the liver clear blood LDL.
    4. Bile acid sequestrants help the liver reduce the production of excessive cholesterol.

Have a lipid panel blood test done regularly, particularly if you have a family history of high cholesterol. Starting at age twenty may help treat a familial disease. Having it rechecked regularly until the 40s, when it should be every 1-2 years. Those with a diagnosis of high cholesterol, smoking, being overweight, diabetes, heart disease, or a significant family history should have it checked more frequently. See your family doctor.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

Kibbles (A base to be eaten alone, in salads, Mexican, or Oriental. Good for high cholesterol)

    1 lb. 90:10 ground beef
1 15 oz. can cannellini beans
1 15 oz. can black beans
    1 yellow onion chopped
    4 cloves garlic, minced
    1 red bell pepper, diced
1 tsp. of your choice garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, taco seasoning, soy sauce, or Worcestershire sauce
¼ cup of red wine or beef stock
Sauces such as green or red salsa, enchilada sauce, chipotle peppers in adobo with honey 50:50, teriyaki, Korean barbecue, Kewpie mayo
2 green onions, diced for garnish
Additionally, 1 large sweet potato, 1 cup of rice, taco or tostada shells
In a skillet, add 2 TBSP olive oil and brown ground beef (I used venison, but bison is also a healthy choice). Remove. Add another TBSP of oil and cook the onions and red bell pepper until the onions are translucent. Add garlic for one minute. Rinse beans and add to the skillet as well as the meat. Season with your choice. Add red wine or beef stock and heat for five minutes. Serve in shells or with rice or potatoes. Cover with sauce and green onions.
