Mused after deciding to address three controversial topics. All three are primarily discussed in Harvard Women’s Health Watch. For the next three weeks I will provide the pros and cons of these. Each topic deserves more than a musing to cover adequately but I hope to provide thought provoking information for you to discuss with others or look up on your own. Today’s topic is inflammation, what it is, minimizing it, and improving what you have.

INFLAMMATION; WHAT IS IT, MINIMIZING IT AND IMPROVING WHAT YOU HAVE.
Inflammaging is defined as chronic, low-grade inflammation throughout the body that occurs with aging. It is estimated that 35% of American adults are affected. Inflammation accelerates aging and may contribute to half of all deaths worldwide, according to Nature Medicine.
Inflammation is a normal, protective part of the immune response to short term injury or infection. It helps bringing good cells and blood supply to heal or cure. As we get older, our immune system isn’t as efficient at tamping down excess inflammation which can cause cell damage. Cell damage is normal for aging. Those with less tend to live better and longer and vice versa.
Inflammaging is associated with arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and autoimmune diseases. So chronic inflammation can do more than just make you look and feel older than your chronologic age.
(Did You Know? The term “inflammaging” was coined in the year 2000.)
The first anti-inflammatory drug, aspirin, was introduced at the turn of the 20th century. Sixty years later nonsteroidals like ibuprofen were discovered. While they help stem inflammation, chronic use can result in side effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding.
What has brought inflammation to attention is the ability to use some blood markers as a method of measuring inflammation levels. Some include C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor, and interleukin (IL)-1 and IL-6.
Lifestyle changes should be primary in treating inflammaging. These include:
1. Exercising. Recommended is 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous each week.
2. Eating healthfully (see foods in the “La Dolce Vita” section below). This includes feeding your gastrointestinal tract where the microbes live that help your immune system and lesson inflammation.
3. Controlling weight. This is especially the fat around your intestines which is a particular culprit in inflammaging.
4. Managing stress. This causes the stress hormone, cortisol, to increase inflammatory markers. Deep breathing and meditation can help too.
5. Prioritizing sleep. When we sleep, we start trimming the sources of inflammatory chemicals in the brain.
6. Limiting alcohol and smoking. Smoking is a strong inducer of inflammation. Immune cells in the liver detect alcohol as an inflammatory agent.

These Foods Fight Inflammation and Have Antioxidants
Vegetables. Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, cabbage, arugula and endive are not only good for salads but are high in antioxidants. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and brussels sprouts are high in fiber. Useful tip is the brighter and more variety in the colors, the more benefit you receive.
Fruits. Blackberries, blueberries, cherries, strawberries and kiwis all contain flavonoids which are potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.
Nuts, seeds, and healthy oils. The first two are high in fiber while olive oil has antioxidants along with oleic acid which helps reduce inflammation.
Whole grains and legumes. These are high in fiber and antioxidants. High-fiber diets promote gut bacteria to produce certain fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory activity.
Turmeric. This spice contains curcumin which is an antioxidant and fights free radicals reducing inflammation.
