Mused after deciding to address three controversial topics. All three are primarily discussed in Harvard Women’s Health Watch. For the next three weeks I will provide the pros and cons of these. Each topic deserves more than a musing to cover adequately but I hope to provide thought provoking information for you to discuss with others or look up on your own. Today’s topic is cannabis in aging adults, particularly women.

CANNABIS USE IN THOSE OVER 50, ESPECIALLY WOMEN
Whether it be medicinal or those chasing old remembrances, cannabis has been used by one in five people ages 50 to 80 in the past year. It is legal for recreational use in 24 states and for medicinal use in another 15 states. Use is growing fastest among those who are married, college-educated, and have a higher income. The forms most commonly taken include edibles, topicals, and tinctures over smoking or vaping.
• A national poll of adults ages 50 to 101 found many reasons for use. The top reason is to relax (81%). Other reasons include sleeping better (68%), feeling good (64%), relieving pain (64%), and improving mood or mental health (53%). Other reasons include treating a medical condition, improving appetite, and sexual enjoyment.
(Did You Know? The cannabis products with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the ones that contain this psychoactive component. CBD, or Cannabidiol, does not produce a high, and many use it for relaxation. The dried leaves of the marijuana plant contain both compounds.)
CAUTIONS
1. Cannabis products are far more potent than they were decades ago. Dosing can be difficult because of this and because some methods, like edibles, take longer for their effects to occur than others.
2. Falls are the number one reason older folks end up in the ER, and the effects from cannabis greatly increase this number. The JAMA Internal Medicine found that medical visits rose more than 27-fold among adults 65 and older.
3. Cannabis can interact with prescription and over-the-counter drugs. This is one of the main reasons to discuss this with your physician.
4. The interactions with alcohol can be dangerous.
Dr. Peter Grinspoon, a primary care doctor from Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, recommends starting low and going slow, avoiding smoking it (marijuana smoke contains carbon monoxide and benzene), and discussing it with your doctor.
-Harvard Women’s HealthWatch, Gemini, JAMA Internal Medicine
( As an aside, a recent study by the JAMA Health Forum of more than 460,000 teens found that those who had used cannabis within the past year had a higher likelihood of developing depression and anxiety disorders. They speculate that cannabis greatly impacts the vulnerable developing brain in these young people.)

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Corned Beef and Cabbage, A Primer Made Easy
I’m breaking down this recipe to make with either a slow cooker or on the stove. I’ll include some options also beyond the basics.
If using a slow cooker:
Add vegetables (see below for options) to the bottom of the cooker. Pour 2 cups of liquid over the vegetables. Place corned beef brisket on vegetables. Cook on low for 8-10 hours until all is tender. The last hour, add 1 head of cabbage (cut into wedges) and, if desired, 1 container (14 ounces) of sauerkraut.
If cooking on the stove:
Put brisket in a large stockpot or Dutch oven. Cover with liquid. Depending on the size of the brisket, cook 2-3 hours or until tender. Add vegetables, including a head of cabbage, and cook another 30 minutes or until they are also tender.
Options…
Liquids: Water, white wine, stout beer like Guinness, beef broth, or combinations.
Spices to cover brisket: Either go without or add 1 TBSP black peppercorns, 2 TBSP coriander seeds, 5 bay leaves, 2 cardamom pods, or combinations of these.
Vegetables: Cabbage, sauerkraut, potatoes (I’m using small red), carrots, and turnips. Be sure to cut the potatoes about the same size (to cook evenly).
Other: Some prefer to cover the brisket with stone-ground mustard before cooking. A sauce to serve with brisket: combine ½ c sour cream, 2 TBSP parsley, 2 TBSP whole-grain mustard, 1 TBSP Worcestershire sauce, ½ tsp salt, and ½ tsp pepper.
Lastly, cut the brisket against the grain into ½ inch slices. Seal leftovers in an airtight container with cooking juices (to reheat).
