Mused after reading one more time that the recommendation to wait 30 minutes after eating to swim is an OUTDATED MYTH!

Wine of the Week: Chenin Blanc

Today’s wine is Chenin Blanc. It’s a white grape wine that can be sweet, dry, or even sparkling. It’s produced mostly in the Loire Valley in France and South Africa, but also in other countries, including the U.S. Its taste can be citrus, stone fruits, apple, or even a hint of ginger. It goes well with shrimp, oysters, lighter seafood, chicken, salads, and even Indian and Asian dishes. It’s also a classic pairing with Mediterranean food. Cheers!

Health Goals for the Second Half of Your Life

While approaching 50 may be 30 for someone who feels and acts young, the party can’t go on forever. This is the time in your life to set yourself up for a healthy, happy second half of your life. There are a number of things to focus on to maintain good health for as long as possible.

Seek age-appropriate cancer screenings. Aging is the top risk factor for developing cancer. Skin, breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers should be screened. Others, depending on your family history. Smokers should have a lung CT scan. The point is to see your family doctor for regular checkups and screenings.

Prioritize your bone health. Bone loss ramps up around age 50. Increasing calcium and vitamin D intake, and weight-bearing exercise will help. Hormone therapy helps decrease bone mass loss during the first few years of menopause.

Maintain muscle strength. We start losing muscle mass in our 30s. Muscle loss not only weakens us; it also contributes to the slowing of our metabolism. There is a large amount of literature for helping increase muscle mass, according to your current physical condition, even for those over 80.

(Did You Know? Nearly 95% of adults 55 and older have at least one chronic condition, while nearly 80% have two or more.)

Pay closer attention to diet. Eating sufficient protein works in tandem with exercising. Avoiding or limiting many unhealthy foods also helps decrease a number of conditions. A well-balanced diet does a body well.

Improve your balance. While it may not be an issue in your forties, falls are the leading cause of injury for adults 65 and older. Adding balance-boosting activities such as dancing, tai chi, yoga, or even just alternately standing on one foot can help. I use a Bosa ball (think of one half of a ball) and balance on it while using weights. It helps with strength, balance, and core all at once.

Lastly, learn a new skill. Research indicates that it might stave off cognitive decline. Keeping our brains sharp is helpful from a mental health standpoint. If it’s a social activity, like pickleball, all the better since socializing helps our health and keeps us feeling young.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

Grilled Ratatouille or Fancy Grilled Vegetables with Fresh Herbs

Prepare a grill for medium heat. Cut three large beefsteak tomatoes in half crosswise and one red onion lengthwise. Put these, 2 zucchini, 2 yellow squash, and one eggplant on the grill, turning about every five minutes. The tomatoes will be done in 5-6 minutes, being slightly charred. Use a knife to check when the vegetables are tender, then remove, about 20 minutes. When cool enough to handle, chop all the vegetables into bite-sized pieces.
Separately mix ½ cup olive oil, ¼ cup fresh torn basil leaves, ¼ cup fresh chopped parsley leaves, 2 Tbls. fresh chopped thyme leaves, one minced clove of garlic, and 1 Tbls. of salt. Fold this into the vegetables and serve at room temperature.
