Anyone who’s had or known someone with kidney stones remembers the intense pain associated with it. They are more common in men and about half of those who have had them will have them again.Â
The cause of kidney stones occurs most commonly when calcium combines with oxalate or phosphorous. These crystals grow and make their way through the urinary tract. If the stone gets stuck it causes pain.Â

Prevention is the key. Drinking water dilutes the chemicals that form stones. Recommended is eight 8-ounce cups each day. Citrus beverages tend to help block stone formation. Ironically, too little calcium increases oxalate levels and the risk of stones. A high sodium diet increases the amount of calcium in your urine therefore limiting sodium helps. Another dietary change that helps is to reduce animal protein. It increases uric acid that can lead to stones and decreases citrate which helps to limit stones. There are other foods that can contribute also.Â
