  • Insomnia Middle of Night

Mused while watching Wimbledon.  Traditional champagne with strawberries and cream, even the proper British know how to enjoy life.

Get to sleep but can’t stay that way?  Welcome to many of my nights and I don’t have the excuse of hot flashes.  Waking up in the middle of the night and not being able fall back to sleep is the most common form of insomnia.

There are a number of causes besides hormonal changes.  Stress is the most common reason.  Other causes include: sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux, and the male equivalent, an enlarged prostate.

(Did You Know?   About 30% of Americans have some sort of insomnia.)

The best thing to do is mainly nothing.  Don’t sleep in, nap, or go to bed early the next night.  Compensating feeds into it.  To avoid making matters worse use blackout curtains, cover all blue lights, use nightlights rather than turning the light on, and avoid eating at night.  Get up if you are lingering in bed but avoid stimulation.  If you need to watch television, use sunglasses.  A glass of warm milk and a book usually does it for me.

Despite the rain I hope everyone got a chance to see some fireworks.  My 75 year old father puts on an extended show every year including last night.  It’s not the fireworks but a gather of Americans, friends, relatives, neighbors that enjoy sharing the liberties of this country.  Also the libations.
