  • Osteoarthritis, Joint Pain

Mused while reading an excellent analysis of Brexit, the leaving of Great Britain from the European Union. http://www.wsj.com/articles/brexit-a-very-british-revolution-1466800383?mod=trending_now_4.

Daily aches in joints? Fingers sometimes seem stiff? Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, develops when cartilage, the flexible tissue lining the joints, deteriorates. As a result, the joints between bones narrows and can affect the bones causing pain.

-Knees can be swollen, painful and stiff.
-Hands often start with stiffness and soreness particularly in the morning. It may be harder to open a jar, turn a key or typing (thank goodness this isn’t an old Smith-Corona.)
-Hips and Spine arthritis spreads to areas such as arms, legs, and shoulders.

(Did You Know? 27 million Americans are affected by osteoarthritis.)

Regular exercise helps maintain joint function, relieves stiffness, and can reduce pain and fatigue. Goals should include increasing your range of motion or flexibility. Second, stronger muscles help stabilize the joints. Third, aerobic exercise, such as walking, swimming, and bicycling strengthens your heart and lungs that increases your endurance. Last, improving your balance by standing on one foot, tai chi, and yoga also helps.

    La Dolce Vita:

This year is the 50th anniversary of Robert Mondavi opening his winery and “popularizing” wine consumption in this country. His mission statement: “Wine has been with us since the beginning of civilization. It is the temperate, civilized, sacred, romantic, mealtime beverage recommended in the Bible. Wine has been praised for centuries by statesmen, philosophers, poets, and scholars. Wine in moderation is an integral part of our culture, heritage and gracious way of life.”
