Is Icing Injuries Bad for You?
(I want to start by saying that this is an unproven theory, but then so is using ice after injuries. Check with your physician and follow her/his advice.)

In 1978 sports-medicine physician Gabe Mirkin, coined the term the RICE protocol meaning rest, ice, compression, elevation. The National Institute of Health recommends it. Icing for 25-30 minutes cools the tissues and decreases inflammation. Yet Dr. Mirkin now disagrees.
Soft tissue healing works in three stages: inflammation, repair, and remodeling. When tissue is damaged, the immune system initiates the inflammatory response. This involves macrophages that remove dead cells and tissue debris. They also produce insulin-like growth factor 1 which is required for muscle repair and regeneration.
(Did You Know? Ice constricts blood vessels allowing fewer healing cells to reach and heal the injured area.)
How does the body clear swelling? Most of the particles in an injured area are too large to be removed via blood vessels and so they are removed by the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system requires movement to propel fluid through its vessels. The net of this is that early movement (provided it is not further damaging the area) is helpful in removing fluid out of damaged tissues.
If the area is too painful or will damage the area further, a neuromuscular electrical stimulator may be helpful. It uses small electric currents to create nonfatiguing muscle contractions necessary to assist lymphatic fluid movement.
