FEET; AGING EFFECTS, PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

The aging process takes its toll on feet the same as it does elsewhere.  Our tissues become less elastic.  Women are more likely to have foot issues than men.  Hormone fluctuations, including during pregnancy, can cause joints to become laxer.  Older women can develop osteopenia or a decreasing of bone density.  Wearing high heels at any age front loads the pressure on feet.

Some of the more common pathology includes:

Stress fractures which are tiny cracks in bones of the feet.

Plantar fasciitis involves inflammation of the band of soft tissue running along the bottom of your foot.  Carrying extra weight, a sudden increase in high-impact or wearing shoes that don’t provide arch support increase the likelihood.

Bunions are painful bony bumps on the outside of your big toe.  Wearing shoes that are too tight may cause it as well as family history.

Flat feet occurs when tissues lose elasticity and collapse.  It can run in families.

Osteoarthritis is often associated with general wear and tear just like hips, knees and fingers.  Mostly it affects those over age 55 and 60% are women.

(Did You Know? The average American walks 600 miles each year.)

Simple remedies include wearing comfortable, supportive, low-heeled shoes.  Switching to lower impact exercises such as swimming or biking can give your feet a break.  For acute injuries ice, anti-inflammatories and gentle stretching may help.  If foot pain persists more than a week or two you should consult a podiatrist or orthopedic foot surgeon.

Exercises that gently stretch the soft tissues of the foot such as yoga or tai chi can stave off problems.  Also, toe spacers help to improve toe alignment like braces on your teeth.  Not only does it help to minimize the above foot disorders, but it can help to improve balance that the foot “tripod” needs.  Amazon has a number of inexpensive toe spacers.
