    COOKING WITH KIDS

Cooking with kids can not only be fun but may encourage good eating habits, create memories, teach life skills, and reinforce learning. Specifically, food prep can improve fine motor skills, following a recipe involves reading and math as well as following directions, planning a menu requires organizational skills, shopping needs financial literacy, trying dishes from other countries increases cultural literacy, cooking together improves teamwork and communication skills and sharing family recipes builds family values with a sense of tradition. Cooking also provides a venue to talk, an important time for parents and children.

(Did You Know? ChopChop Family is an organization whose mission is to inspire and teach families to cook and eat real food together. For more information go to www.ChopChopFamily.org. )

    Some age-appropriate kitchen fun:

0-2 years: Seat the child near you while cooking and talk with them.

2-3 years: Have them put things in bowls, start counting, mix with hands, tearing.

3-5 years: Count out ingredients, stirring, mashing, spooning, spreading and brushing.

5-7 years: Start measuring, help with reading, introduce knife and stove safety, pouring, peeling, skewering, crushing and shaking.

7-9 years: Specific measuring and weighing, learning fractions such as a half, more safety, cleanup, supervised use of oven or microwave.

9+ years: Responsible for part of a meal one night a week. Shop for fun foods or themes, learn to use other kitchen utensils and equipment with less supervision.

    Shrimp, Rice, Pineapple Boat

Cut a pineapple in half length-wise. Remove the core then hollow it our saving pineapple. Add 1/3 of pineapple and juice to 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce in a blender and mix. Cook 1/2-1 pound of shrimp (I grilled it). Make 1 cup of rice (I used cauliflower rice that microwaves in 5 minutes.) Add BBQ sauce flavored with pineapple to shrimp. To rice add the rest of the diced pineapple, two Tbls of cilantro, zest from one lime, and 3 diced scallions, stir together. Place this in hollowed out pineapple then cover with BBQ shrimp. Squeeze lime on servings when on a plate.
