    The Good News on Cancer

The American Cancer Society reported that cancer mortality declined by a record 2.4% in 2018 and 31% since the 1991 peak. Credit better and earlier diagnostics and therapies and a decline in smoking.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in middle-aged Americans and two-three times more likely to kill someone in their 50s or 60s than even Covid-19. The incidence of some cancers like breast, liver and kidney is also increasing partly for demographic and lifestyle reasons.

The report notes breast cancer is growing by 0.5% annually amid increasing body weights and a declining fertility rate. Liver cancer is also rising due to obesity, excess alcohol consumption, smoking and hepatitis.

(Did You Know? About 40% of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes.)

Some of the Covid-19 vaccine makers like Moderna were involved with using mRNA technology for innovative oncology technology. However, many cancer drug trials have been paused due to Covid. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that diagnoses for breast, colorectal, lung, pancreatic, gastric and esophageal cancers declined by 46.4% in March and April of 2020.

Obviously, it’s important to get your screenings especially mammograms.
