    What Causes Cancer? It’s Complicated

Here is the explanation why the causes of cancer are so complicated by a scientist, Arthur Lambert, who studies the molecular mechanisms of cancer. Often he is asked if something we eat, are exposed to, or what we do results in cancer.

While many cancers are linked to lifestyle choices and environmental exposures, most are overestimated and many probably don’t have any effect on getting cancer. This cause and effect thought pattern is confused with measures of probability. In other words, some things may increase our risk but often it takes a number of other factors for cancer to happen.

Certain risk factors, like inheriting a mutant BRCA1 gene (which causes breast and ovarian cancer) more or less ensure tumor development. Some, like tobacco exposure, are clearly causal, even if most individuals exposed are spared (80-90% of smokers do not develop cancer) but they have a higher rate of lung cancer. Carcinogens work on the margins, acting as one of many factors tipping the scale toward cancer.

(Did You Know? Either directly or indirectly, many carcinogens lead to DNA damage, which is the underlying cause of cancer.)

Our bodies have many processes to repair cell damage or eliminate cells in which repair has been unsuccessful. There are biological barriers like the immune system which seeks out and helps to eliminate mutated cells before they can become cancer.

It isn’t necessary to map every step of the journey to establish a connection between a carcinogenic exposure and cancer. Other things to consider are whether there are other carcinogens involved, lifestyle choices interacting with the initial exposure, status of the immune system, and other pre-existing genetic factors that played a role.

The truth is that we have no idea why some people develop cancer while many others do not. In most cases it is not possible to draw a straight line from some specific event to the development of cancer.
