Mused after reading it’s the 50th anniversary of the movie, Jaws. I recently visited the site on Martha’s Vineyard where some of the film was shot. Jaws was notable for many things. The mechanical sharks (three) had many problems due to not being tested in salt water. Director Steven Spielberg then turned to more subtle ways, like those of Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho), to induce fear in theatergoers. Secondly, the movie created (and still does) the irrational fear of entering the ocean without checking for sharks. Lastly, Spielberg created the summer movie “blockbuster” with Jaws, still being the seventh most financially successful movie of all time. Two years later, the financial success was eclipsed by the summer blockbuster rein”force”d by Spielberg’s friend, George Lucas, with a little-known film called Star Wars.
Wine of the Week: Viognier
Today’s wine is Viognier, pronounced vee aa nyay. It’s a white grape variety. It’s produced in many countries, France, Australia, Chile, Argentina, and of course, the U.S. and others. Mostly dry in taste, it has a sweet smell. It has a rich, creamy taste, often with stone fruits such as peaches and apricots, with notes of honeysuckle and citrus. It goes well with combinations of fruit and sweet spice such as Indian, Chinese, and BBQ foods. Cheers!
Easy, Healthy Breakfast Ideas
As you know, the consensus is that eating breakfast is important for most people each day. Also, the best breakfast (unlike the bacon, fried potatoes, white bread, and pastries) is one that has complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and protein. Specifically, fiber, whole-grain breads and cereals, fruit, and low-fat dairy are typically part of a healthy breakfast.
But breakfast doesn’t always have to be just “breakfast” foods. Last night’s leftovers can be filling. Other countries have soups, beans, curries, and unsweetened yogurt dishes. Even if that is unappealing, a bowl of unsweetened whole-grain cereal with fruits or nuts or low-fat yogurt with the same toppings can be both nutritious and satisfying.
(Did You Know? Eating protein for breakfast means that other meals don’t require as much in order to get your requirements.)
Here are three other suggestions:
Open Face “Sandwiches”
A whole grain bread with spreads and toppings can add variety. These can include hummus, yogurt, cottage cheese, or nut butters. There are almost an infinite number of toppings, such as hard-boiled eggs, tuna or salmon, vegetables such as avocado, roasted eggplant, tomatoes, cucumber, sprouts, peppers, and fruits like bananas and berries.
Eggs
Still an economical way of adding protein. Adding vegetables or diced meats to scrambled eggs or omelets increases nutrition and flavor. A hard-boiled egg is an easy grab-and-go. A pro tip is to combine diced vegetables with an egg in a safe container sprayed with cooking spray. Microwave for one minute. Enjoy as is or top a slice of whole grain toast.
Overnight Oats
A little prep the night before takes decision-making away in the morning. Use whole rolled oats or old-fashioned oats, and low-fat or nonfat milk or soymilk. Put equal amounts in a jar and cover overnight for at least 4 hours. Add nuts or seeds, fruit, vegetables (like carrots and/or sweet potatoes), and spices like cinnamon, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, or shredded coconut. Can be eaten chilled or warmed. It freezes well too, and can be taken out and placed in the fridge to thaw overnight.
