Mused after watching J. J. Spaun win the golf tournament, the U.S. Open, by making a 64-foot putt on the last hole. While the commentators could have suggested his “best club” in his bag was his putter, they said it was his attitude. You see, he started yesterday playing badly but did better by not letting poor play affect his attitude. Couldn’t we all do better in this in life?
Important to Know:
Botox and fillers cannot be purchased for later use.
Patients must receive injections on the dates listed above.
Wine of the Week: Beaujolais
Today’s wine is Beaujolais. It’s made from the gamay grape. Most commonly, it comes from the Beaujolais region in France. It’s a cousin to pinot noir and therefore a lighter red wine. It has a garnet color to it with flavors of red and black fruits (raspberries, cherries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries). Serve chilled or not, pairing it with chicken, pizza and other light meals. Cheers!
Five Arthritis Food Myths
One in four adults has some form of arthritis. It is characterized with painful, stiff, inflamed joints. There are some claims that certain foods help this condition. Whether they claim to help the pain or rebuild the cushioning that arthritis damages, be wary.
Gelatin is a protein made from collagen extracted from bones, skin, and cartilage of animals. When you consume it (take note, those of you who are taking collagen), it is broken down during digestion and so does not directly add to the collagen in your joints.
Pectin is a soluble fiber that purports to reduce arthritis symptoms. Pectin comes from the skin of fruits like apples and oranges. Like gelatin, it is a gelling agent. While anecdotal evidence suggests relief, no scientific study supports this.
Gin-soaked raisins are more of an old home remedy than actual science, and there is no discernible mechanism for help to occur.
(Did You Know? The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis from wear and tear of the joints, and rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease.)
Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may help the number of tender joints, but do not significantly impact blood markers of inflammation or disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis.
Apple cider vinegar has a number of unsubstantiated claims, including no effect on arthritis.
WHAT DOES HELP?
Medication, reducing excess body weight, avoiding tobacco products, stretching daily, and regularly engaging in low-impact physical activities can help with arthritis symptoms.
