    Vitamin D and Coronavirus

Two weeks ago we looked at the benefits of zinc to our immune system. Today we’ll discuss the latest in Vitamin D helping our immune system.

The JAMA published that risk of testing positive for coronavirus was 1.77 times higher for those that are vitamin D deficient. But there is no demonstration that it is the cause of a higher risk.

Vitamin D supports the immune system. The debate is how much a role it plays in protecting from Covid-19 according to Dr. Julian Tang, virologist at the University of Leicester. Vitamin D boosts our immune system by stimulating production of cathelicidin, an antimicrobial protein that serves as a “natural antibiotic” according to Michael Zasloff, professor at Georgetown Medical Center.

(Did You Know? Sunlight synthesizes Vitamin D through the skin. Light between wavelengths 290 and 310 are responsible. Unfortunately, this wavelength doesn’t penetrate the atmosphere in northern latitudes in winter.)

Lack of Vitamin D is linked with conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Bone diseases from lack of vitamin D include rickets in children and osteoporosis.

Vitamin D supplements are needed especially in winter. Fifteen micrograms daily are recommended to optimize health. Most people get about 3 a day through diet. Anything above 100 doesn’t yield any benefit. Taking large doses over time can lead to excessive blood calcium levels and damage to the liver and kidneys.
