Mused after hearing, “Yes, Virginia, there is a fall in Cincinnati”.

THE POWER OF BRIEF MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY

Last year the American Psychological Association found that 68% of therapists reported an increase of their waiting lists.  Fortunately, research has found that even brief time-limited programs at critical moments can have significant benefits. These interventions can be as brief as 30 minutes.  Even though they aren’t a substitute for psychotherapy, they can be powerful ways to prevent challenges from escalating.

Many studies confirm this.  For those on the waiting list, one telehealth session reduced feelings of hopelessness and had their anxiety improved.  Suicide and chronic pain are two areas that giving patients the right tools in as little as a two hour session can be as effective as many weeks of conventional cognitive behavioral therapy.  Kaiser Permanente published that a single-session for problematic drinking reduced the number of days participants engaged in heavy drinking by 26%.

At Stoney Brook University they offered a free half hour session for adolescents to boost resilience and share their experiences.  Published in the journal, Nature, of more than 2,400 teens, it was found that depression and disordered eating were decreased with benefits persisting after three months.  The author, Dr. Jessica Schneider, a former grade school teacher, said that “Long term change is a series of tiny changes, and every tiny change matters.”

Similarly, a 30-minute online training session for first year college students allowed them to hear others’ stories and share their own.  Again, in the Journal of Nature, involving over 4,000 students they found that there were fewer mental health symptoms.

Geoffrey Cohen, a professor at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education, perhaps puts it best when he describes crafting opportunities for people to perform at their best by saying, “It’s almost like entering a party where you don’t know anyone, but the host greets you warmly, easing your nerves so you feel more able to socialize.”

     Tummy Tucks

Tummy tucks get rid of extra abdominal skin and fat while tightening the tone.  Liposuction on the sides helps make the whole waist smaller.  Call us for details or come in for a consultation, 513-793-5772.

Pictures are about 4 weeks after surgery so the scars and swelling will improve for months to come.
