What You Need to Know About Virus Variants

As many of you know there is a variant of the Covid-19 virus that began in England but is now in other countries as well as Colorado, California, and Florida. There is a different variant in South Africa. What does this mean?

A variant arises when there are changes in its genetic code. A virus infects cells and then reproduce creating copies of itself. During the copying mistakes can be made like typographical errors. The coronavirus is an RNA virus which lacks a protein “proofreader” which corrects mistakes.

The mutations involve the “spike protein” that helps the virus infiltrate cells. These mutations help it to bind more tightly to the cells.

Preliminary data suggest these new variants are no more likely to cause severe illness than more familiar forms of coronavirus. There is a possibility of increased transmissibility however. Although they are currently being studied by the major manufacturers of the Covid vaccine, they are confident that the new variants will be covered by the current vaccines. The current vaccines elicit an immune response that targets several areas of the spike protein. Previous research involving other versions of the coronavirus were treated effectively by the current vaccines.

Infectious disease experts continue to recommend social distancing, masking and hand washing as well as avoiding exposure to others indoors.
