Mused after making a yuzu margarita. Yuzu is a citrus fruit that originated from Korea. It is popular in Asian cooking. Simple ways of using it are for tea, fish, salads, and of course, cocktails. The juice can be bought on Amazon. Margarita: 1 part tequila, half part agave, half part fresh lime juice and half part yuzu.

    STRENGTH TRAINING, A BEGINNER’S GUIDE

Why strength train? Muscle strengthening activities in studies show a 10-17 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and death from any cause. The improvement in daily living, as we get older, is immeasurable.

The body builds muscle by resistance whether through bands, machines, weights or your own body weight. This causes micro-tears in the muscle which when they heal cause enlargement in the muscle.

There are four essential keys to getting stronger. One is consistency. Results of this will show when the number of times you do something or the amount of weight you use increases. Secondly is correct form. Not only does this optimize your improvement but it helps to minimize injury while exercising. Third is to eat correctly, and as I call it, “feed the muscles”. A well-balanced diet is important but adding extra protein helps to repair those micro-tears and build muscle. Lastly, getting enough sleep gives the rest your body needs for repair and growth.

(Did You Know? A loss of muscle mass, strength, and function is known as sarcopenia and commonly occurs with aging.)

How often should you do strength training? The minimum recommendation is two 30-minute sessions weekly. Work on your upper body one day and lower another. Just as important is to make sure your form is good by finding an introductory program or getting a trainer at the beginning. Again, no equipment is necessary. Body weight when used properly can give most people a good workout. Think of pushups and squats and how hard they can be when just beginning. Try to perform three sets of each exercise doing 8-10 repetitions in each set.
