Mused after hearing that the clocks turn forward (spring ahead, fall behind) early this Sunday morning. For me this means a week of adjusting to the new time. Honestly, I just wish they would pick one and stick with it. While many understood it was instituted to give farmers more daylight to farm, the truth is that it was started around WWI to conserve fuel.

Myth of the Week: Mouth taping while sleeping mandates nose breathing but has not been shown to reduce snoring, prevent dry mouth, boost oxygen intake, or benefit oral health. Consider talking with your doctor about any sleep issues first.

    BREAST AUGMENTATION SPECIAL

Breast augmentations on new patients between now and May 31, 2026, are just $6900 for silicone and $6500 for saline implants! Also, you get a free dose of filler (such as Juvederm) or Botox. This includes the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia, the OR fees, AND the implants! Schedule your consultation by May 31, 2026, and complete the surgery by June 30, 2026. Some restrictions apply. Call for your complimentary consultation.

SLEEP OPTIMIZATION AND BRAIN RECOVERY DURING SLEEP

Scientists have recently studied (using MRI) what happens in our brains during sleep. They found that a fluid surrounds our brain and it flushes out toxins, cell debris, and junk proteins that build up during the day. This cleansing helps curb inflammation and keeps the brain working properly.

If we don’t sleep well, our brain tries to compensate while we’re awake, triggering impulses of fluid that coincide with sharp reductions of attention lasting a few seconds. This sleep-like moment is a brief breakdown of our ability to focus, according to Laura Lewis from MIT.

Research shows that our brains have two modes: one is housekeeping mode, the other is awake mode, according to Dr. Nedergaard, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Rochester. When sleep-deprived study participants were tested, they had slower reactions and missed cues. Scientists also observed a surge of cerebrospinal fluid throughout the brain.

(Did You Know? 50 to 70 million Americans live with a chronic sleep disorder such as sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome.)

Sleep loss raises your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and depression. It also affects focus, emotional balance, and the ability to manage stress.

    Factors That Interfere With Stress

Age and Hormones: Women in menopause can have night sweats, hot flashes, and mood changes.
Nocturia: Waking more than once to urinate occurs in older adults.
Lifestyle Factors: The semiyearly time change, shift work, jet lag, caffeine, alcohol, and some medications.
Mental Health and Stress: Anxiety, depression, and racing thoughts make sleep difficult.

    What To Do

    • Create a calm sleep environment by keeping your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool. White noise, a fan, or blackout curtains help.
    • Set a regular sleep schedule each day.
    • Limit screen time 30 minutes before bed and avoid caffeine at least six hours before sleep.
    • Use your bed only for sleep and intimacy.
    • Manage stress before bedtime by writing down worries and what may alleviate them.
    • Watch what and when you drink to limit the number of trips to the bathroom.
    • Lastly, seek help if you regularly wake unrefreshed. Many sleep issues are treatable.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

    Bedtime Snacks

The best bedtime snacks for sleep are small, nutrient-dense, and rich in melatonin, magnesium, or tryptophan to calm the nervous system. Top choices include tart cherries, bananas, almonds, walnuts, kiwis, yogurt, and warm milk. These should be eaten 1-2 hours before bed to improve sleep quality.

    Top 10 Sleep-Promoting Snacks

    • Tart Cherry Juice/Cherries: Naturally high in melatonin, helping regulate sleep cycles.
    • Almonds/Walnuts: Rich in magnesium and melatonin, aiding muscle relaxation.
    • Bananas: Contain potassium and magnesium for muscle relaxation, plus tryptophan.
    • Kiwi: Contains serotonin, which helps with REM sleep.
    • Warm Milk: Provides tryptophan, aiding in serotonin and melatonin production.
    • Greek Yogurt: High in calcium, which helps the brain use tryptophan.
    • Oatmeal: A complex carb that boosts melatonin levels.
    • Turkey/Cheese: Excellent sources of tryptophan, a precursor to sleep hormones.
    • Hummus and Whole Grain Crackers: Provides healthy carbs for better sleep.
    • Pumpkin Seeds: High in tryptophan, which improves sleep quality.

    Why These Work

These snacks promote sleep by regulating blood sugar and supporting the production of serotonin and melatonin. Avoid heavy, spicy, or high-sugar foods, which can cause indigestion and disrupt sleep.
