How to Keep Resolutions
Whether you made a resolution to start the New Year or begin one any other day of the year, research-backed strategies help change behavior. Use the “SMART” approach.
Specific: Instead of resolving to eat healthier or exercise more, say, for example I will eat at least 3 serving of fruits and vegetables a day or I will walk at least 30 minutes 5 days a week.
Measure: Use numbers to help measure progress. For example I will sleep at least 7 hours each night, go to the gym 3 times a week, etc. A log can be helpful for accountability.
Achievable: Set a goal you can reasonably accomplish. If you rarely walk, don’t resolve to run a marathon but working your way up to 3-5 miles is more realistic.
(Did You Know? Reward yourself for accomplishing goals. Buy yourself something after reaching a weight loss amount or distance you have walked even if they are just intermediate goals you have accomplished.)
Relevant: Make sure each goal aligns with your values, lifestyle, and long-term goals.
Time-Bound: Give yourself a specific and realistic timeline, with intermediate timed goals along the way.
