Periodontal Disease and Cancer
A recent study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute links higher cancer rates to periodontitis. The study analyzed almost 7,500 older adults comparing periodontal disease over a period of 15 years.
Participants with severe periodontitis had a 24% higher risk of developing cancer and those with no teeth at baseline had a 28% higher risk compared with those with no or mild gum disease. The two cancers with a higher risk were colorectal and lung.

The study even accounted for those with a history of smoking since they have a higher risk of lung cancer. Also, no associations for higher risk were noted for breast, prostate or lymphoma cancers.

LA DOLCE VITA:
Modern Coq au Vin: 6-8 chicken thighs dusted with flour, salt and pepper browned in half EVOO and half butter. Remove. In same pan add cup of pearl onions and 4 oz. of mushrooms. Cook until tender. Add 1 and ½ cups of chardonnay and cook until reduced by half. Add about 6 oz of artichoke hearts and 1 and 1/2 cups of chicken stock and bring to a boil. Add chicken and bake at 350 degrees until tender 25-45 minutes. Put back on stove and add 2 TBL of cream, reduce liquid in half.
I served it with mushroom risotto.
