New Aspirin Guidelines
The American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association has just come out with the recommendation that those over age 70 who do NOT have heart disease or a reason to take aspirin should not be taking it prophylactically. The reason is that the risk of bleeding is higher on aspirin and that the potential complications outweigh the benefits of prophylaxis.
Low-dose aspirin is still recommended for those 40-70 who are at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. These people usually have a strong family history of heart disease. It is also still recommended for those with plaque build up to prevent a second heart attack.
