Mused after watching the World Cup soccer, Wimbledon tennis, the British Open golf tournament, and cycling’s pre-eminent race, the Tour de France. All this past week. These events exceed just entertaining sports. They give us a chance to cheer for our favorite player, team, city, or country. And on occasion, they demonstrate just superior efforts of athleticism. Cheers to Messi, Spain, Sinner, Fox, and Pogacar!
“Instead of stoking another angry American summer, the Cup gave this nation a badly-needed civic boost. Sometimes it takes a foreigner to tell you how good you have it, and here they were, by the planeload, basking in our air conditioning and raving about domestic wonders like truck stops, free refills, and bottomless bowls of tortilla chips. Outsiders forced us ingrates to re-appreciate marvels of capitalism like Costco and Hidden Valley Ranch. Those thirsty Scots merrily drained Boston. Algerians annexed Lawrence, Kansas. Viking god Erling Haaland gave a hallelujah to the briny magic of a Katz’s pastrami.”

HOW TO NAVIGATE ONLINE DIETARY ADVICE & SKIP THE AI SLOP
As healthcare information leans more into AI, it’s crucial to be vigilant. Many people seek out AI information because of convenience and not getting timely information from their physician. (PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE call us to get the correct information regarding your care in a timely manner.)
“AI slop” refers to low-quality AI-generated content, usually mass-produced, generic, and often misleading. It comes from AI content farms that use it to generate advertising revenue or improve search engine rankings. It is simply repackaged information pulled from other web content. The harm can run from being annoying to tricking you into buying something or giving them personal information.
(Did You Know? Recent surveys found that 46% of adults acted on nutrition information from “influencers”. One in three of us use an AI tool to create nutrition or weight-loss plans. Seventy-one percent of adults were able to differentiate between AI and human-generated content. It will continue to go down.)
How to avoid bad AI health content:
Does it feel alarming or urgent? Health professionals avoid “sensational language”.
Check out who posted the content.
Check the credentials. That “heart surgeon” may not be real. Connect the source with the information.
Citing a research study doesn’t mean credibility. This is my pet peeve. It may come from anyone, not a legitimate source. It may involve only 10 subjects. It may have been successful in animals and not tried on humans. The deceptions to prove their point go on, and many are just not scientific.
Avoid posts with “secret information’. There are no conspiracies in solid scientific medical information.
When in doubt, call or email me. Call me a “doubting Thomas,” but I’m a scientist first and want to make sure you are properly cared for. -Dr. M

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

Caprese Salad
This easy-to-make salad is a way to use tomatoes and other fresh vegetables that are currently in season. It is another flexible recipe to make it easy for you to use what you have available.
The basis is tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
However, above I used a yellow tomato, mozzarella balls, thin red onion, and cucumber.
Other options include incorporating peaches or melon, using creamy burrata, prosciutto, pancetta or other Italian meats, pasta or using a pesto drizzle instead of balsamic vinegar.
For even more fun, try grilling some of the ingredients.
The most important point is to use FRESH ingredients!

“To have my procedure performed by such a gifted surgeon and his talented staff has been an honor and a blessing! I am beyond excited about my results!!! From start to finish everyone has treated me like a dear friend rather than a patient. My husband and I are truly grateful for this highly competent, efficient, thorough, thoughtful and especially kind surgical experience. Thank you!!” M.J.
