Mused after trying Pig Candy BBQ in Loveland. Delicious brisket and pulled pork. A unique treat is their smash burger with pulled pork, sauce, and coleslaw. It’s their second restaurant, located on Bridge St. just off Loveland Madeira Road. Located in an old church gives it a cool atmosphere.
THE JOY AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF BIKING
Want a fun social activity that’s healthy and gives you regular aerobic exercise? With the right equipment, biking can be done at any age.
The health benefits are not just cardiovascular. Bicycling also helps build muscles as the hips, thighs, and calves work together to create a smooth pedaling motion. Increasing the strength of these muscles helps to stabilize and improve balance.
Cycling is easy on the joints. There is less pressure on hips, knees, and ankles than walking or running. Therefore, it is good for not only those who have pain, but also those who have had joint replacement surgery.
Like my friends and I, it’s a great way to socialize, which is good for your mood and brain. We get together many Saturday mornings and ride on the bike trail, followed by brunch and our “WCB” (water, coffee, and beer).
(Did You Know? Cycling is a great way to sightsee. Since it covers more ground, many travel agencies set up cycling as a way to see more of an area such as Italy, our National Parks, or just a city such as San Francisco.)
Selecting the right bike depends on where you’ll be riding. Road bikes, mountain bikes, and hybrids each have their merits. Get the right fit for whatever your bike. Experts at the bike shop should help. In general, the seat height should allow a slight bend in the knee when your leg is at the bottom of the pedal stroke to allow maximal efficiency pedaling. Also, for those unable to use two wheels, three-wheeled recumbent or upright bikes enable most others to enjoy their ride.
Tips for Cycling Safely
1. Always wear a helmet.
2. Wear shoes with a stiff sole for better pedaling efficiency.
3. Padded shorts and cycling gloves make longer rides more comfortable.
4. Be visible by wearing brightly colored clothing.
5. Pay attention to your surroundings to avoid accidents.
6. Always bring water and for longer rides (see my note from last week), calories and electrolytes.
