    Measles

This year is setting up to have the largest number of measles cases since the disease was officially “eliminated” in 2000. A growing number of children without inoculation who are exposed to those who bring the virus from overseas is the cause. There tends to be groups of children due to religious or other beliefs that spread the virus between themselves.

Measles is highly contagious infecting up to 90% of those who are susceptible. About one-third of children who develop measles will have complications including diarrhea, pneumonia or ear infections. About one in 1,000 will contract encephalitis or a brain infection that can leave the victim deaf or with an intellectual disability. Rarely, death can occur from complications of measles.

(Did You Know? The overall problem with the measles is no one knows who will develop any of the complications above which is why the vaccination is so important.)

Recent research has found that the virus may leave the immune system in a temporary state of amnesia leaving the body open to other infections. This may last up to two to three years. Before widespread immunizations the occurrence of measles predicted childhood deaths from other infectious diseases over the ensuing 28-35 months.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the most common side effects from the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination include arm soreness, fever, and mild rash. Joint soreness also may occur especially in teenage or adult women who have not had a previous inoculation. There is a small risk of seizures caused by fever that is temporary and again more common in older children which is why the MMR is recommended in younger children. Lastly, an extremely rare allergic reaction is possible and those who have had a life threatening reaction to neomycin should not get the vaccination.
