Mused after spat cocking a turkey breast then grilling it. Seems to be the thing to do this Thanksgiving. (Spat cocking is removing the backbone then flattening the bird so it cooks more evenly.)

How to Be a Friend to Someone Living with Dementia
A week ago a patient came in in tears because his wife of 55 years is slowly deteriorating with dementia. He feels lonely. Eventually we all will know someone. Here are some tips to help.
- Educate yourself on the different types and stages of dementia.
- Call and invite your friend to do activities you both enjoy.
- Ask what they are comfortable doing and what they need help with.
- Talk directly with your friend and make eye contact.
- Be patient. Just answer questions and give them plenty of time to think.
(Did You Know? A “friendship divorce” can occur in either direction. Working at it may help avoid it in those with dementia.)
- Don’t correct or argue.
- Offer reminders. If they are confused, give your name and connection.
- Don’t ask a series of questions which can be confusing. Don’t ask questions which require short term memory like “what did you do today?”
- If going out, avoid loud, crowded places.
- Touch is important. Hug. Offer a gentle touch on the arm or hand. It shows you are not afraid of them.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Italian sausage, brussels sprouts, and squash with spicy maple sauce. Preheat oven to 425. Thinly slice 1 lb Italian sausage and 12 oz of brussels sprouts halved then mix with oil on a baking sheet. On a second sheet combine 1.5 lbs thinly sliced butternut squash and 1 sliced red onion. Again toss with oil. Bake the first sheet 25-30 minutes and the second 35-40 minutes. In meantime, in small saucepan, add ¼ cup maple syrup, 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar, a serrano pepper, and ½ tsp of a smoky, spicy spice like ancho or chipotle. Combine all when cooked and add ¼ cup of mint leaves.
