    McKenna’s Musings

Mused after spat cocking a turkey breast then grilling it.  Seems to be the thing to do this Thanksgiving.  (Spat cocking is removing the backbone then flattening the bird so it cooks more evenly.)

Laser hair removal package of 6 is now 10% off!  Our “cool tip” minimizes discomfort.  Take advantage of permanent hair reduction treatments and be ready for next spring.  Above the waist the treatments are every 4-6 weeks and below 8-12 weeks.  Little discomfort and quick treatments by a qualified nurse.  Now through the end of October.  Call for details 513-793-5772.

How to Be a Friend to Someone Living with Dementia

A week ago a patient came in in tears because his wife of 55 years is slowly deteriorating with dementia.  He feels lonely.  Eventually we all will know someone.  Here are some tips to help.

    1. Educate yourself on the different types and stages of dementia.

    1. Call and invite your friend to do activities you both enjoy.

    1. Ask what they are comfortable doing and what they need help with.

    1. Talk directly with your friend and make eye contact.

    1. Be patient.  Just answer questions and give them plenty of time to think.

(Did You Know?   A “friendship divorce” can occur in either direction.  Working at it may help avoid it in those with dementia.)

    1. Don’t correct or argue.

    1. Offer reminders.  If they are confused, give your name and connection.

    1. Don’t ask a series of questions which can be confusing.  Don’t ask questions which require short term memory like “what did you do today?”

    1. If going out, avoid loud, crowded places.

    1. Touch is important.  Hug.  Offer a gentle touch on the arm or hand.  It shows you are not afraid of them.
