Mused after binge watching Killing Eve on Amazon Prime/BBC/AMC. While the story is about a hit woman and the female MI6 agent who’s chasing her, they have a mutual admiration that at times supersedes their missions. Superb acting as both have won awards.

    Tests Measure Homemade Masks’ Efficacy

First of all, anything is better than nothing.

Simple masks like the ones worn by OR staff and you commonly see that are blue, prevent wearers from dispersing viruses through coughing, sneezing, talking or breathing.

Respirators, like the N95 masks meant for health care workers, do the same but also protect wearers from inhaling viruses once they become airborne. It’s not only the non-woven fabric but also an electrostatic charge that traps particles that might penetrate the surface.

Homemade masks are more porous given the weave of the cloth material. But viruses are encapsulated in mucous or saliva and almost any face covering will trap those particles.

(Did You Know? A cough or sneeze will launch droplets of mucous or saliva at speeds of 50-100 miles per hour.)

The Center for Filtration Research at the Univ. of Minnesota testes the percentage of particles the size of the coronavirus blocked by various household materials.

    Coffee filters (2 layers): 10%

    Paper towels (5layers): 40%

    Bedsheets (5 layers): 50%

    T-shirt fabric (5 layers); 60%

Swiffer dry sweeping cloth (5 layers): 60%

    Vacuum bags: 90%

    Auto filters: 95%

    Furnace filters (3-5 layers): 98%

This study did not study the fit of masks. Also, there is a trade off of filtering out particles and your ability to breath.

I’m sure many of you have done take out dinners the past 6 weeks. It’s great to support the restaurants you enjoyed in the past. More are opening up to the take out venue. I recently got lasagna from Forno in Montgomery. A couple others, Tano and Out of Thyme I know the owners and have been happy to purchase food from them. We’ll continue to weekly support a local restaurant I hope you will too.

This procedure is accomplished using Dermapen, a micro-needling device that works to tighten, lift, and rejuvenate skin by stimulating factors and collagen. It is effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles as well as improving brown spots, stretch marks, and scars, especially from acne. It creates channels in the skin in a controlled manner. As compared to other skin rejuvenation treatments, Dermapen does not damage the epidermis and, therefore, is safe on any skin type. It has a short treatment time with minimal discomfort and downtime.
