Tests Measure Homemade Masks’ Efficacy
First of all, anything is better than nothing.
Simple masks like the ones worn by OR staff and you commonly see that are blue, prevent wearers from dispersing viruses through coughing, sneezing, talking or breathing.
Respirators, like the N95 masks meant for health care workers, do the same but also protect wearers from inhaling viruses once they become airborne. It’s not only the non-woven fabric but also an electrostatic charge that traps particles that might penetrate the surface.
Homemade masks are more porous given the weave of the cloth material. But viruses are encapsulated in mucous or saliva and almost any face covering will trap those particles.
(Did You Know? A cough or sneeze will launch droplets of mucous or saliva at speeds of 50-100 miles per hour.)
The Center for Filtration Research at the Univ. of Minnesota testes the percentage of particles the size of the coronavirus blocked by various household materials.
