Flu Shots- get one and here’s why.
Often experts look to the flu season that occurs in Australia to estimate the viruses and how bad a flu season will be for the U.S. It has been an earlier and tough season overall in Australia. The predominant virus is the H3N2 which causes more serious illness particularly in the elderly.
The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months gets vaccinated by the end of this month. It takes about 2 weeks to become protected and lasts up to a year. The most common side effects include soreness at the site of injection but it can also cause muscle aches, headache and low-grade fever. More serious side effects are rare.
(Did You Know? Last year about 45% of adults and 63% of children were vaccinated. Between 36,000 and 61,000 people died in the U.S. from the flu last year.)
There are other reasons besides prevention to get the flu shot.
It provides protection for various strains that often circulate together and there’s evidence that the vaccine lessens the duration and severity of the illness if you get it. One study analyzed over 40,000 patients hospitalized with influenza and found those vaccinated had a 36% lower risk of dying than those who didn’t. In fact, those vaccinated were half as likely to be hospitalized than those who weren’t.
Kroger has signs out stating that they are giving the flu vaccine for FREE.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Lamb and Pasta. Brown 1 lb of ground lamb and add onion. Cook until the onion is clear. Add garlic and roasted pine nuts (be careful they burn quickly). Add one 16 oz can tomatoes (mine had basil in it) and about half dozen Kalamata olives cut in half. Season with oregano, salt and pepper. Stir for several minutes. Add spinach and feta cheese and stir for another couple of minutes. Serve over shell or similar pasta.
