Fish: Farm Raised v. Wild Caught

First of all, the benefits of regularly eating fish outweigh the risks.

Secondly, fish is high in protein, heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids, rich in vitamin D and minerals.

Third, eating fish at least twice a week is associated with lower risk of stroke, Alzheimer’s, depression and eating fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel, death from heart disease.

(Did You Know? To limit exposure to mercury, minimize eating large fish like shark, swordfish, and King mackerel.)

Contamination levels vary dependent on many factors. Both wild and farm raised are located in waters that have some pollutants. Farm raised have the advantage of not being long-lived and do not eat other fish that may be contaminated.

Antibiotics are sometimes used on farm raised fish but levels are minimal.

Farm raised fish are helping to avoid over fishing in the wild. The U.S. watches for responsibly raised fish but other countries may have less regulation. Be sure to check where the fish has been harvested.
