Low-Carb Strategy for Fighting the Pandemic’s Toll

Gain weight the past couple of months?

Already have diabetes, heart disease, obesity or other diet related disease? You have a three times greater chance of a worse outcome from Covid-19.

A low-carb diet may be your answer.

Currently federal dietary guidelines call for a diet high in grains with more than 50% of calories coming from carbohydrates. Since 2018, the American Diabetes Association considers a low-carb diet as one standard of care for people with Type 2 diabetes, in part because it lowers blood pressure and improves the good cholesterol, HDL.

Just published in Cell Metabolism, researchers found that among 7,337 Chinese patients diagnosed with Covid-19, well-controlled blood sugar was correlated with “markedly lower mortality”.

(Did You Know? An expert government committee every 5 years drafts nutrition guidelines that drive school lunch programs, feeding programs for the elderly and poor, and military food.)

The University of Indiana studied 262 adults with Type 2 diabetes. 56% were able to reverse their diagnosis following a very low-carb diet with support from a mobile app in just 10 weeks. The results have sustained for two years.

2015 was the last time the federal government issued dietary guidelines. Since then there have been many studies focusing on low-carb diets. The problem with the guidelines are that they are for healthy people and not for those who have diet-related diseases which a majority of Americans now have.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

Lobster BLT: Sounds expensive but isn’t.   I got my two lobster tails on sale at Kroger for $4 each. Boil the lobster and remove from shell. Add ½ cup mayo, 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice, 1 Tbsp of chives and dill, one diced tomato, 2 slices crumbled bacon (I used leftovers), salt and pepper to taste. Add lettuce and buns or as I did, eat without them as an appetizer.
