Mused after enjoying a cool drink with ruby red grapefruit juice, lime, simple syrup, vodka and MINT! Other things to enjoy with mint: on grilled fish, fruit salad, pasta instead of basil, vanilla ice cream, and of course, lamb chops.
A patient earlier today was complaining to me about her constipation. In her case it was from her pain pills after surgery. In many people’s cases there is no specific cause. In fact, one study showed it occurring in up to 40% of those over 60 years old.
The first strategy is to examine your diet. Nutrition guidelines recommend 25 grams of fiber each day for women 19 to 50 years old and 21 grams after 50. For men the recommendation is 38 and 30 grams respectively. The best way to achieve this is to consume high-fiber foods. These include beans, whole grains, nuts, vegetables and fruits.
Exercise and drinking plenty of water help. Dehydration causes constipation. Aerobic exercise helps stimulate bowel function. Fiber supplements like Metamucil help those with more chronic cases.
(Did You Know? Fiber is the part in plants that cannot be broken down. It adds bulk to the stool which adds movement in your bowels and holds water which makes your stool softer.)
Make sure medical conditions are not causing constipation. Certain conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, hypothyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and overactive parathyroid glands are common causes. Like the above mentioned pain pills, many medications can cause bowels to not function effectively.
