WHERE ARE WE WITH SUNSCREENS?
-About 88% of men still say they never use sunscreen
-One in seven adults under the age of 35 believes that sunscreen is more harmful than direct sunlight. (Sunscreens don’t cause cancer.)
Melanoma has increased eightfold in women ages 18-39 from 1970 to 2009! A recent study in Japan showed that one application of sunscreen effectively covered only 60% of the intended area, but a second application increased this to 90%.
Both types of rays from the sun, UVA and UVB, can do damage to collagen fibers, leading to premature aging of the skin AND can damage DNA, contributing to skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and have the ability to pass through glass and clouds. SPF is an acronym for Sun Protection Factor, which only rates the amount of UVB rays that reach the skin. Therefore, it is important to use a “Broad-spectrum” product for both UVB and UVA protection.
1. It is recommended that the SPF be a minimum of 15. This allows 1/15th of the sun’s UVB radiation to reach the skin. SPF 30 allows 1/30th of the rays and a 96% UVB protection. It is also recommended to apply sun protection 15-30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the chemicals to absorb into the skin. Reapplying the product every 2 hours is necessary because the formulas break down in the presence of sunlight within that time. Use about two tablespoons to cover the face, neck, chest, ears, and hands. Don’t forget to rub in spray-on sunscreens. Remember to use lip balm that has SPF 30 or higher too.
(Did You Know? Anti-oxidants like vitamin C serum, when applied before your sunscreen, help to prevent sun damage, which can accelerate aging and wrinkles.)
Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and convert UV light to harmless heat. Mineral sunscreens (their bottles should be shaken before application) contain ingredients like zinc oxide and act as a physical barrier reflecting UV rays before they can penetrate. Bemotrizinol or Parsol is a product used in other countries that is up for approval in the U.S. next spring. It offers protection with fewer ingredients.
All of the sun protection products at our office have both UVA and UVB formulations. We also sell a number of antioxidants, vitamin C serums. Call to make an appointment to see one of our skin care nurses, who will clarify which product would be best for you. The skin care nurses are available Monday through Friday with some evening hours.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Quick Dill Pickles
I have pickles with my lunch almost every day. Most are homemade.
Take the cucumbers above from Kroger, cut off the ends, and slice them in half. In a pot, add 2 cups of white vinegar, 2 cups of water, a teaspoon of sugar, and 2 tablespoons of salt. Cook, stirring until dissolved. Cool. In 2–16-ounce jars, add cucumbers. Mix together 2 thinly sliced cloves of garlic, 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds, 1 teaspoon of dill seeds, and 4 sprigs of dill. Add to jars. Then add cooled liquid. Refrigerate for at least an hour before eating.
NEVER TRIED BOTOX?
Here’s your chance, and a $65 discount, courtesy of the distributor of Botox, Allergan. A special QR code here at the office provides the discount. Schedule an appointment and see what everyone has been saying about facial wrinkle improvement.
