Mused after hearing that there was a cosmetic surgery death in Cincinnati last week. I don’t know the details, the surgeon, or where it was performed. I DO KNOW that our surgery center just passed a rigorous inspection by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Centers, and we are certified by the Ohio Department of Health for Ambulatory Surgery Centers. It has been certified by these organizations for the 19 years it has been open. Experience is one of the most important safety features. I have over 40 years of surgical experience and have done over 500 tummy tucks in the past 20 years. If you ever have any questions about safety (either in our office, medispa/skincare, or operating room), please contact me. Safety is first and foremost.

THE NEWEST RECOMMENDED FOOD PYRAMID BY THE GOVERNMENT

The U.S. government released the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans on January 7, 2026, marking a major shift in federal nutrition policy. The update is a new inverted food pyramid that emphasizes animal proteins, full-fat dairy, and “real foods” while strictly advising against ultra-processed items.

Key Changes in the 2025–2030 Guidelines

Inverted Food Pyramid: The new visual inverted pyramid flips traditional models on their head, placing protein (including red meat), full-fat dairy, vegetables, and fruits at the wide top tier, while grains are moved to the smaller bottom tier.

Protein Prioritization: The guidelines now recommend increasing protein intake for many adults, with a shift towards prioritizing nutrient-dense protein sources.

Full-Fat Dairy & Animal Fats: For the first time in decades, the guidelines promote full-fat dairy over low-fat versions and list butter and beef tallow as “healthy fat” options alongside olive oil.

Strict Stance on Ultra-Processed Foods: There is a new, explicit recommendation to avoid “highly processed” foods (chips, cookies, sugary cereals) and refined carbohydrates like white bread.

    Added Sugars & Alcohol:
    • Added Sugars: The guidelines state that the consumption of added sugar should be minimized, suggesting it is not considered part of a healthy diet.
    • Alcohol: Specific daily drink limits have been replaced with a broader recommendation to consume less alcohol for better health.

(Did You Know? In my opinion, there are both good and questionable aspects of these dietary recommendations. Increased protein not only provides what we need but also helps keep us full, and hopefully, we eat less. Vegetables and whole fruits are important, and when eaten as a snack, they keep us away from poor choices. Dairy and animal fats provide nutrients. I’m just concerned about how much fat they may contain, as well as the amount of “healthy fats” in the new dietary guidelines. Fats contain more calories per unit than protein or carbohydrates. Fats and red meat are also a concern for those wanting to avoid cardiovascular disease. Whole grains are important, as is minimizing highly processed foods. Personally, I’ve followed a high-protein, high-fiber (grains and complex carbs) diet for decades.)

Daily Serving Goals (Based on 2,000 Calories)
Food Group New Daily Goal Notable Change
Protein Increased servings Emphasis on nutrient-dense sources
Vegetables 3 sevings Encourages whole fruit over juice
Dairy 3 servings Specifically promotes full-fat dairy
Healthy Fats ~4.5 servings Includes butter, tallow, and olive oil
Whole Grains 2-4 servings De-emphasized visually but still recommended

Note on Controversy: These guidelines have faced significant pushback from some nutrition experts and organizations like the American Heart Association, who express concern that the increased emphasis on red meat and saturated fats may conflict with long-standing cardiovascular health research.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

Ina Garten’s Irish Coffee Affogato (and my adjustments)

In a coffee mug, add 2 scoops of vanilla bean ice cream, 1 TBSP Irish whiskey, 1 TBSP of Kaluha, 2 TBSP espresso, a dollop of whipped cream, and a shave from a chocolate bar.

My adjustments: If you don’t have Irish whiskey, like me, use Bailey’s Irish Cream. If you don’t make espresso, stores do sell some instant ones that taste good, or you can even try some strong coffee to give it the “mocha” flavor.
