Mused after reading that there is no evidence that general anesthesia increases dementia or Alzheimer’s, particularly in the older population. There can be a temporary “fuzziness” from surgery, but studies show that long-term, there is no mental harm.

RED MEAT MAY HELP REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF ALZHEIMER’S

The Journal of the American Medical Association recently published a study from Sweden’s Karolinska Institute that shows red meat may decrease the incidence of Alzheimer’s. The APOE4 gene is associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer’s. Cholesterol builds up in brain cells of APOE4 carriers, causes a disruption of communication between neurons, and generates amyloid plaque, an Alzheimer’s hallmark.

You inherit one copy of the APOE gene from each parent. The most common is APOE3, and the least is APOE2, which carries the lowest risk of Alzheimer’s. A quarter of the population carries at least one copy of APOE4, which is one of the biggest risk factors for Alzheimer’s. It is more common in those with Northern European or African ancestry. God smiled on the Italians and Greeks!

(Did You Know? There is at-home testing to check which APOE gene you have by a saliva test. The companies include empowerDX, RXHome Test, Genovate, and 23andMe, which includes a report on APOE 4.)

A diet high in red meat may help the brains of APOE4 carriers. The JAMA study, and two studies from the U.K., found that eating unprocessed red meat reduced the incidence of Alzheimer’s to the level of the other genes. The JAMA study also noted that over the study’s 15-year period, APOE4 carriers had a lower risk of dying and, ironically, a lower cholesterol level than those who didn’t eat red meat. Noncarriers of APOE4 didn’t benefit from eating more red meat.

In all three studies, eating more red meat appeared to negate the increased genetic risk of APOE4. Nutrition is complicated, but these carriers of APOE4 may absorb more nutrients, such as Vitamin B12. Low levels of this have been associated with cognitive decline.
