Mused after seeing The Eagles and The Steve Miller Band concert in Indianapolis. Very exciting to see rock legends at the very end of their careers. The only other time I saw The Eagles was their “Hotel California” tour of, gulp, 1977. Continue through the QR code for more pictures and descriptions. |

Twinkies, Why Popular and Impact of Appetite Suppressing Meds
Ten years ago, Twinkies disappeared. The company that owned them went bankrupt. They were purchased out of bankruptcy made many changes and were recently sold for 10 times the amount.
Through a combination of cost-cutting, innovation, and marketing Hostess blossomed after 2013. They added new products in addition to striking a nostalgia cord. But timing is what many successful companies have on their side. The pandemic provided just that.
(Did You Know? Twinkies were invented during the Great Depression. Vanilla replaced banana as the filling during World War ll.)
Almost half of U.S. consumers are eating three or more snacks a day, up 8% in the past two years. U.S. snack sales rose 11% last year. Many see snacks as an affordable luxury during not only the restrictions of Covid, but the current economic downturn.
So how does this interact with health trends and appetite suppressing meds? Besides affordability, many balance their healthy food intake with the occasional sweet. Hostess decreased the size of many of their new products not only for carrying convenience but also to decrease calories.
It has yet to be seen the full effect of appetite suppressing meds, but remember, as the commercial used to say, “there’s always room for Jello.”
Hostesses best selling product is Donettes which contain almost as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.
Hostess prolonged the shelf life of a Twinkie from 26 days to 65 days. (I’ve eaten some much longer than that.)
James Dewar invented Twinkies and ate several each day until his death in 1985 at age 88.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE
Ina Garten’s Tomato and Orzo Soup |
|
A delicious and easy recipe for these cooler days.
Sauté in medium pot 2 finely chopped onions in olive oil until translucent. Stir in 3 minced cloves of garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add 4 cups of chicken stock and 1-28 ounce can crushed tomatoes. Add 2 tsp. of salt and 1 tsp. pepper. Cook 15 minutes. Then add ½ cup of orzo and ½ cup of water. Cook for about 10 minutes, occasionally stirring to avoid the orzo sticking to the bottom of the pot. Add ½ cup of heavy cream or plain Greek yogurt. Stir and cook until orzo soft, about 10-20 minutes more. Add more water or chicken stock if it becomes too thick.
Serve with croutons or grilled cheese.
