Last night while I was eating Madisono’s Orange Chocolate Gelato my head started to hurt. This seems to happen to everyone once in a while, so, I thought we would all like an explanation of why that happens.
The coldness we eat stimulates a nerve in the roof of your mouth called the trigeminal nerve. The cold causes the nerve to dilate the blood vessels in the frontal lobe of your brain which is the decision making center.
(Did You Know? Trick the trigeminal nerve by pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth between cold bites to warm it up and avoid “brain freeze”.)
The increase in blood flow to the front of the brain causes swelling and therefore pain. The pain signals an override to the trigeminal’s earlier command and over about 30 seconds the blood flow decreases easing the swelling and pain. And now for the second bite…
