Snacking Myths
Myth 1: Snacking is healthy or unhealthy. A snack is anything eaten between meals. Choose low calorie foods so as to not eat more calories over the day than your body needs.
Myth 2: Low fat snacks are the best choice. While “low-fat” implies healthy, some foods like pretzels have refined grains and salt which can lead to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Look for mono- and polyunsaturated fats over saturated.
Myth 3: Snacking will spoil your appetite. Knowing your body and whether a snack will be a help in the amount you eat during meals or not. A small snack may lessen the amount of calories eaten during a meal.
(Did You Know? I typically eat a big dinner which keeps me full and I avoid eating sweets before bedtime. Knowing your body helps in healthy eating.)
Myth 4: Healthy snacks take effort. Healthy choices are easy to find: fruit, pre-cut vegetables, nuts, hummus with veggies, tuna snack pack, hardboiled egg, popcorn without butter, cheese, and unsweetened yogurt are some.
Myth 5: We need to snack. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you’re satisfied. But don’t let distraction or pre-portion items override your full signals your body sends out.
If you’re thirsty, have an unsweetened drink; if you’re bored read a book, do a puzzle or listen to music; if you have low energy, go for a walk; if you’re sad or lonely, call a friend.
