  • Small Talk

Mused while enjoying the phrase Occam’s razor. Simply put, the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

Want to feel better about today being Monday?  Make small talk with those you don’t know or know well.

Studies published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology and the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin show emotional benefits when we interact with others as simple as pleasantries.  In fact, chitchat helps build empathy and a sense of community.  It also demonstrates to our children that we are all human when you appreciate the food server or say hello to the mail carrier.  Everyone has something to contribute.

(Did You Know?  Try the 10/5 rule.  When you’re 10 feet away make eye contact; at 5 feet away, say hello.)

Tips for successful small talk.  As an introvert, small talk, especially at a party, is difficult for me.  I have successfully used a number of the techniques below.

Find common ground.  “How do you know the host?  Have you been to these events before?”

Commiserate.  “Lousy weather we are having.”  “Are the Reds ever going to win?”

Go deep.  Stay on one topic and dig deeper.  Sports, family, and travel are topics that work well.

Embrace ignorance.  Admit you don’t know about something and learn from it.

Ask interesting questions.  A response to someone saying it’s cold is to ask what’s the coldest you’ve ever been?

Exit gracefully. Instead of ending abruptly with “well, nice to meet you” try “before we take off” or since I only have a few minutes left”.

New Kybella for fat under your chin!!!

Kybella is an injected solution that melts the fat under your chin.  From the same company that brings you Botox and Juvederm, the process is without anesthesia and usually takes 30 minutes.  Recommended are 2-3 treatments but down time is minimal.  Call for more information or to set up a complimentary consultation to see if you are a good candidate and what the costs would be.

Eyebrows too thin or lacking?  Phi Brow is a technique of applying permanent makeup with individual strokes simulating individual hairs.  Not the old way of coloring in the eyebrow area.

Facial brown spots from this summer’s sun?  Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) or microneedling helps to reduce the pigment cells.  Purchase a package of three treatments and get the fourth FREE.  Go to www.dermapen.com for details of CIT.  Also improves wrinkles through stimulation of collagen.
