The placebo effect is a beneficial result from a drug or treatment that cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself. For example, if I give you a vitamin pill and tell you it’s a sleeping pill many people will believe it and possibly fall asleep.
A new study finds that not only do placebos cause neurobiological effects in the brain but also affect the body especially the immune system. Patients taken off a real drug and put on a placebo continue to have fewer symptoms because the body is preconditioned to continue the same response.
(Did You Know? More than half of all doctors prescribe placebos. The most common placebos are vitamin pills and over the counter pain relievers.)
Genetic differences appear to make some people more likely to respond to a placebo. Even when patients know they are getting placebos, the fake drugs have been shown to reduce migraine pain and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
