This time of year many of you make resolutions to work out, eat better, or lose weight. Something we don’t think enough about is becoming more mentally strong. Amy Morin recently wrote an article on 13 things mentally strong people avoid.
- Waste time feeling sorry for themselves. They learn to take responsibility for their actions and outcomes.
- Give away their power. They understand they are in control of their actions and emotions.
- Shy away from change. They embrace it and welcome the challenge.
- Waste energy on things they can’t control. Don’t complain about bad traffic, lost luggage and especially other people.
- Worry about pleasing others. Or, conversely those that dis-please others to make themselves feel better. Be fair and kind to others where appropriate.
- Fear taking calculated risks. Weigh the risk-benefit ratio.
- Dwell on the past. Learn from it but avoid excessive feelings good or bad.

- Make the same mistakes over and over. Definition of insanity, right?
- Resent other people’s success. Strength of character allows genuine joy for other people’s success.
- Give up after failure. Every failure is a chance to improve.
- Fear time alone. Use the time to reflect, to plan, and to be constructive.
- Feel the world owes them anything. Enter the world prepared to work and succeed on your merits.
- Expect immediate results. Grit is a virtue of successful people.
