Mused while contemplating “human nature follows needs when needs outweigh values.” I guess that explains the Donner party.

What do Abraham Lincoln, Bruce Springsteen, Buzz Aldrin and Winston Churchill have in common?  They all suffered from depression at some time in their lives.

In 2014, 4.8% of men 18 or older had at least one major depressive episode compared with 8.2% of women.  However men are much less likely to report depression or seek treatment.  Men are conditioned not to talk about their feelings.  This signals weakness which for men indicates they are a failure and are defeated.  Feeling defeated is why many men withdraw and try to isolate themselves.

(Did You Know?  The definition of depression is five or more of the following symptoms for at least two weeks:  depressed mood most of the day, irritability, decreased interest or pleasure in most activities, significant change in weight or appetite, change in sleep, change in psychomotor activity, such as either agitation or sluggishness, fatigue, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, changes in concentration and recurrent thoughts of death.)

    How can you help?

Normalize the situation.  Insist that this isn’t his fault and he isn’t alone.

Speak carefully.  Don’t be critical, he’s already beating himself up.  Emphasize WE are in this together.

Don’t use the “D” word.   Rather ask about insomnia and lack of energy.

Also ask about suicide or thoughts about hurting himself.  Men are four times likely to die from an attempt than women.

Suggest a therapy that focuses on behavior changes like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Behavioral Activation as these are more likely to be successful.

Encourage him to do what he does well.  An activity a man does well produces a sense of mastery and accomplishment.  Try not to take on tasks that may become overwhelming.

Acknowledge your limitations and encourage therapy.

Don’t give up even if he is pushing you away.
