GEL MANICURES, HARMLESS BEAUTY OR A HEALTH HAZARD?

This touches on a subject of how much science we believe as individuals. COVID, nonstick pans, seed oils, and vaccines are just some of the recent topics that science doesn’t have definitive answers. How we respond to them is as much our belief system as what we read and hear.

The European Union recently banned a chemical used in gel polish. Gel manicures use a gel-based polish that is cured under a UV light. This makes it more durable.

The chemical banned is trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, or TPO. The studies done are mostly on animals. They were exposed to high doses of TPO in an oral form. This resulted in reduced fertility, testicular problems, fetal development abnormalities, and potential liver and kidney injury.

(Did You Know? “Once a nail product is cured, there’s no risk of absorption or inhalation.” Dana Stern, professor of dermatology.)

In Europe, if there’s a reasonable probability that exposure to a chemical can cause adverse effects, it is banned. The concern is that nail salon workers may be affected. The FDA in the U.S. restricts a few chemicals in personal care products. Europe is taking the approach that even though there is a small risk, there is no great benefit, and there are alternatives.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends limiting gel manicures to special occasions and giving your nails at least two weeks without polish to recover. If you’re pregnant, avoid them. Also, due to the UV exposure, apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 to your hands before getting a gel manicure.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

White Chicken Chili (from Sunny on “The Kitchen”, Food Network)

In a large pot, add 2 TBLS. olive oil and brown 1 pound ground chicken. Add one diced onion and sauté. Add 2 tsp. cumin, 2 tsp. thyme, 1 tsp. ancho chili pepper, 1-2 tsp. red pepper flakes, 2 TBLS. salt and 1 TBSP. pepper. When the onion is translucent, add two minced garlic cloves. While it is cooking, shred a whole roasted chicken and add it once the garlic cooks for a couple of minutes. (Optional: add a can of cannelloni beans with the roasted chicken.) Add a bottle of beer. Then add chicken stock until everything is covered. Cook until it thickens, 20-30 minutes.

Topping options: cotija cheese, black beans, avocado, cilantro, lime, red or green salsa, jalapenos, and of course, chips for dipping, or add crumbled chips for texture.
