Humidity

While we have been fortunate this summer to have mild weather, the threat of heat, particularly humidity remains.  Humidity is perhaps the most important factor influencing our summer outdoor activities.  For example, an 88-degree day with 40% humidity feels like 88 degrees.  With 70 percent humidity, it feels like 100 degrees. 

What humidity does is decreases our body’s ability to cool itself.  Humidity prevents sweat from evaporating and so heat is not dissipated.  As the heat builds, blood is sent to vital organs to survive and our skin to try to cool the body.  Our heart and breathing rate go up and eventually brain temperature starts to rise affecting our mental capabilities.  This is particularly true during exercising or sports.

Since it takes 10-14 days to acclimatize to weather conditions, what can be done to minimize the effects of humidity?  The first is to recognize that the humidity is going to be a factor for your outside activity.  Check the heat index to find a combination of temperature and humidity.  Hydration is important especially with physical activities.   Hydrate before going outside.  While outside, plan on drinking 3-5 ounces of water every 15 minutes.  If out longer than an hour, add 3-5 ounces of a sports drink that has electrolytes and drink every 15 minutes.  If strenuously exercising, consider salt tablets.  Remember to not wear a hat since cooling is done through your head.  Lastly, watch for signs of heat stroke such as fatigue, nausea, dizziness and confusion.
