These medications mimic the natural GLP-1 hormone, which is released in the gut after eating. They bind to receptors that signal the brain to feel full, slow gastric emptying (keeping food in the stomach longer), and prompt the pancreas to release insulin, reducing blood sugar levels.

Common side effects are primarily gastrointestinal, including: nausea and vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, reduced appetite, sometimes leading to muscle loss and “Ozempic face” (sagging skin due to rapid weight loss).

WHAT TO DO WITH THE LOOSE SKIN?

It’s something not discussed much when first starting weight reduction. How much you lose (and where on your body) depends on many factors. Some of these include: age, how quickly the weight is lost, personal skin tone, protein intake, and exercise (up to a third of the weight loss can be muscle), and body habitus (where you have enlarged fat cells).

In a skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter and 1 tbsp oil. Add 4 cups of sweet onion that has been halved and thinly sliced crosswise. Cover and cook, stirring until soft, about 5 minutes. Uncover and cook until caramelized or slightly brown. A tsp of brown sugar or a tbsp of balsamic vinegar helps. This may take 30 minutes. Add ¼ cup of water if necessary. Season with salt and pepper. Spread eight slices of bread with butter. Put the butter side down and spread the opposite side with Dijon mustard. Top Dijon with onions, Gruyère cheese, and thinly sliced pickles of choice. Close sandwiches. Grill sandwiches over low heat until the bread is toasted and cheese melted, about 5 minutes. Flip and do the same on the other side. Cut in half and serve.
