  • Flying Fears?

Mused while eating soft serve ice cream.  The only thing that cools hot summer evenings.

With the advent of schools staring earlier than ever, July has become THE month for vacation travel.  Which leads to how comfortable do you feel flying?  Airport violence (especially overseas), long security lines, and delayed flights are concerns but do you have feelings that boarder on a phobia?

12 steps to reduce your fear of flying (not Erica Jong for you Baby Boomers):

    1. Demystify turbulence.  Planes are built for it and birds fly in regularly.
    2. Upgrade comfort.  Business or first class may provide the service and relaxation to take your mind off fears.
    3. Learn the specific safety features of a plane.
    4. Attend a fear of flying clinic.  Some airports have them.
    5. Similarly, see a therapist to cope better with your fears.
    6. Take flying lessons.  Now there’s taking the bull by the horns!
    7. Sit closer to the front of the plane where it is less bumpy and quieter.
    8. Visit the cockpit and talk with the pilots.
    9. Decide which seat (aisle, middle or window) makes you more comfortable and use it.
    10. Medicate with sedatives, booze BUT NOT both.
    11. Use logic, phobias are irrational fears.  Statistics and facts help if you know them.
    12. Do it anyway and face your fears.

Speaking of vacations, careful about spilling oils from citrus fruits on your skin while sunbathing.  When mixed with UV rays, the oils can cause skin burns.  They can take a few days to develop also.  That Margarita may be deadlier than you think!
